Animal Liberation Kitchen Restaurant, also known as ALK, has provided vegan comfort food in various forms for years and now has a physical location near the Broadview Hotel. Animal Liberation Kitchen was founded by the Spasic family at Toronto Underground Market and has since become a popular vegan choice at many mainstream festivals and events. The modest location with only three seats, previously home to Pulp Kitchen, was rebuilt by the family’s father. Family cats are depicted on the exterior and inside of the logos.
A quinoa bowl is a nod to Pulp’s bowls, and ALK is known for its variety of bowl specials. A bed of quinoa holds peppers, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, oregano, fermented red cabbage, and ajvar, as well as kale, rubbed with black salt and olive oil and topped with lemon. Everything may use a little more chopping, but it’s perfect for those raw veggies like cherry tomatoes that you want to keep whole. Raw vegan energy balls with almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, dates, figs, and coconut are also available.
The Spasics also run a Burrito Project, which regularly raises funds by selling burritos from Animal Liberation Kitchen. They offer several services, including small and large event catering, pop-up events for brunch and dinner parties, private parties, business lunches, and fundraisers, in addition to their shop. Check out their cooking workshops as well. The staff is super friendly and helps you through any inconveniences if by any chance there is one here.

Good Karma Restaurant is a concept founded in 2018 to help you improve your health and mind from the inside out. Near The Broadview Hotel, there is a chain called Good Karma that specializes in Indian food produced using healthy and locally sourced ingredients. This straightforward idea, the latest venture by restaurateur Hermant Bhagwani, differs from the entrepreneur’s previous endeavours. Unlike his coastal eatery Goa Indian Farm Kitchen in Bayview Village or Indian Street Cuisine Co, the focus is on healthy fast food (you can also find it in the food court at Fairview Mall).
The menu at Good Karma is almost all gluten-free, and there are lots of vegetarian dairy-free alternatives. Substitutes based on coconut milk and nuts are likely. The red lentil, edamame, and green peas salad, which is garnished with corn kernels and bay leaves, is an example of a traditional healthy eatery’s smoothies, bowls, and salads getting an Indian touch. The sriracha chilli cauliflower, a Bhagwani mainstay for the past 15 years, is something you should undoubtedly order. This gluten-free meal is tossed in sambal and sweet chilli sauce after being battered with chickpea flour.
The setting of Good Karma is cozy and casual. With the beautiful bricked walls and colourful chairs and tables, they have brought a minimalistic scenery in the restaurant that makes you always prefer dining in rather than ordering through delivery. Everything looks contemporary and hygienic, and the staff does their best to achieve your comfort and pleasure.

Lady Marmalade Restaurant is a popular all-day brunch place in Toronto, serving up some of the best Eggs, Benny and Breakfast Poutine. In late 2018, Lady Marmalade relocated from its previous location on Queen East to this new home on Broadview near The Broadview Hotel. The pair David Cherry and Natalia Simachkevitch still own the property. Many meals are highly customizable to fit gluten-free and vegetarian diets, and they use free-run eggs, premium meats, sustainable fish, and local produce as much as possible.
Cheddar and spinach waffles, thick, crispy, bready but moist waffles studded with spinach, sharp cheddar melted right into the grids, add a savoury spin on the generally sweet breakfast dish. A tomato cream balances out the delicious flavours and provides some brightness and wetness, while a roasted tomato added to each slice offers a burst of vegetal sweetness. For an extra $3.50, add bacon or creamy avocado on top (or both) and two poached eggs on the side. English muffins are topped with soft and saucy Mexican-style slow-roasted pulled pork, freshly poached eggs, bits of salty, creamy queso fresco, acidic citrus onions, velvety hollandaise, and an additional vibrant herby sauce in the Cochinita Pibil Eggs Benny.
The inside is made of 5,000 square feet of Baltic birch, with cedar cladding on the exterior. The tiny upper floor is bathed in natural light thanks to dizzyingly high skylights. Omar Gandhi designed the two-level, 54-seat structure, which dates back to 1885 and is encased in luxuriant but breezy light wood. Consider this hidden gem on your subsequent brunch cravings.

Est is a restaurant that offers impeccably plated tasting menus and vegan alternatives and bar snacks. Est (pronounced East) is a refined destination for seasonal, six-course meals, led by Sean MacDonald. At 28 years old, he has already won the S. Pellegrino Young Chef award and is the only Canadian now on the Best Chef Awards list. Chef/Owner Sean Macdonald and Chef Reece MacIsaac’s seasonal recipes are influenced by the diverse ethnicities inside Canada’s borders.
If you’ve ever wanted to eat a hot dog in a restaurant, you may either follow the tasting menu or select snacks like prawn hotdogs. This is a classic tasting meal featuring traditional and premium wine pairing options. The vegan version offers an entirely different menu, featuring smoked potato with white mole and poppy seed rice pudding. MacDonald has been recognized on The Art of Plating, a website dedicated to beautifully presented food, so dishes such tiny fresh heirloom tomatoes with green garlic oil and housemade spelt tofu are no surprise.
The Riverside site of Sugar Loaf bakery has been changed into a tiny 30-seater near The Broadview Hotel, with the small area being transformed into a thin 30-seater. The restaurant is open six days a week and is likely to be fully booked most nights, but a contemporary bar offers seven walk-in seats every night. They provide a diverse selection of wines worldwide, displaying various grape varieties and winemaking processes. Be sure you visit this hidden gem if you come across it.

Indian Spice Room Restaurant, located near The Broadview Hotel, features vegetarian home-style cuisine from Northern and Southern India, prepared by a chef with over 20 years of experience. Chola Bhatura, Pao Bhaji, Dosa, Uttapam, Aloo Tikki, Bhalla Papdi, Vada Pav, Hakka Noodles, and more than 70 other dishes are among the items on the Super Menu. Warm and welcoming seating, as well as delivery via all apps.
Taste Indian cuisine the way it was designed to be eaten. They take pleasure in their distinctively spicy and flavorful products, and you can taste the freshness. Spicy isn’t always synonymous with hot. It entails selecting the appropriate spice to bring forth a distinct range of flavours. Spice Room invites you to take a trip down memory lane with them. The Entrées include some of the best vegetarian meals from every region in India. I highly recommend you try Vegetable Hakka Noodles consisting of Flat Noodles cooked with onion, ginger, beans, vegetables served with chilli and soy sauce.
The setting of Spice Room is elementary and cozy. The lighting is perfect for a dinner date, and the staff provides the best possible atmosphere for you. The shaded patio is one of the restaurant’s attractions and provides a clear view of the city to the neighbourhood’s people. Make sure you visit this hidden gem if you don’t want to miss this great opportunity.

Chef Rony Goraichy and Diana Sideris’ second restaurant, Tabule Riverside, is located on Queen St. East. Tabule, which opened in 2012 near The Broadview Hotel in Riverside, provides traditional Middle Eastern cuisines in a beautifully textured ambiance, with many of the same popular menu items as the original restaurant. The exotic cocktail menu includes martinis, fresh juices, and a high-end wine list.
The menu is mostly the same as it was at the first location, with cold and hot mezze and veggie, meat, and seafood selections from the grill. Three cold plates, including Labni, Babaganüj, and hand-chopped Tabülè, are available on the table’s sampling platter. The Fattüsh Salad is simple but excellent and refreshing. It’s made up of roughly chopped tomatoes, cucumber, toasted pita, and fresh herbs that have been tossed in lemon, olive oil, and a sprinkle of sumac. I recommend Kefta Banadura, a deep dish of tomato garlic stew topped with onions made with minced ground lamb and beef removed from the skewer. On the side, there’s rice and grilled vegetables.
Tabule is open every day from 11 a.m. for lunch and dinner, with a belly dancer weaving between tables on Saturday nights. Every surface appears to be covered in classic geometric patterns, hand-painted Arabic details, or expanses of black and turquoise, all of which are rich in textures. There’s enough for a patio out back, but it won’t be ready until next season. Takeout and delivery orders are accepted. I hope you don’t take my words for it and check their extraordinary service yourself.

Gusto 501 is a multi-level Italian cafe, restaurant, and bar with a rooftop patio and seating for over 200 people and is conveniently situated near The Broadview Hotel. A ground-floor Trattoria, a second-floor Mezzanine, and a bi-level Attico cocktail bar section open in the evenings on weekends make up the facility. An all-glass exterior, a skylight, and a modern twist on terra cotta brick are among the award-winning Partisans’ design features. An open concept kitchen features a wood fire grill on the ground floor and, unlike Gusto 101, a wood fire pizza oven.
This floor has a cafe where you can get coffee, typical Italian pastries, and fresh bread. Cozze Alla Scapece, a dish that inventively blends mussels with cubes of polenta, zinging chilli, and crispy parsley leaves, all sitting in a thick, earthy sauce, is one of the Trattoria’s antipasti. A Scarola salad is prepared with a truffle vinaigrette and topped with heirloom apple, walnut, pecorino, and red onion. Rapini e Salsicce is a chewy, thin-crust pie with a fior di latte, a spicy chilli kick, and a lovely smoky flavour from the wood fire oven.
By far, the most theatrical cocktail served at the cocktail bar is the Cosmopolis. A delicious mixture of peach-infused Tito’s, lemon, and Aperol “Gusto” grenadine is gently injected in a housemade ice sphere. It’s then smashed and topped with a sprig of rosemary to give it the appearance of the fruit. With charcoal-infused Bearface whisky for a grey colour and shapes stencilled onto a foamy egg white cap, the Continental Aspro has a superb aesthetic.
Gusto 54, which also owns Gusto 101 and Chubby’s Jamaican, has yet embarked on one of its most ambitious undertakings. The staff is very kind and friendly so ensure you get to visit this restaurant.

Core Restaurant, located near The Broadview Hotel, is a relatively new addition to Toronto. The crew at Core Restaurant, which bills itself as a “fresh, contemporary Canadian bistro,” comprises cooks who have worked in fine dining kitchens in Toronto and abroad (George, Bosk, STK, Omaw, Canoe, Daniel, Eleven Madison Park, etc.). Fine dining without the stuffiness, with a focus on Canadian products and a variety of approaches.
The menu is relatively short, with six appetizers, six main courses, and four desserts. There’s also a 5-course tasting menu ($70, plus $40 for regular wine pairings, or $50 for premium wine pairings) featuring vegetarian and pescatarian options. Begin your meal with sourdough bread and handmade butter. Every decent loaf of sourdough demands a great crust and a dash of sour flavour. The halibut is perfectly cooked and is crispy on the outside, flaky and not dry on the interior. The show’s highlight, though, is the many kohlrabi preparations (a vegetable that resembles a bit like a radish but is more closely associated with cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts, collard greens, savoy, and gai lan).
At Core, there isn’t much in the way of decor to speak about. The chairs are really comfortable. It’s poorly lit, which creates a lovely mood but makes food photography difficult unless you go during the day or sit near the window. The service was quite impressive. The servers are outstanding, friendly, amusing, and patient with the customers. They’ll expertly answer all of your queries and steer you in the direction of our dinner. You won’t be able to recall the last time you were so warmly greeted and at ease in a restaurant as you will at Core.

Mean Bao is the newest downtown restaurant to branch out on the east side, and its third location in Leslieville is the largest and sunniest yet. It’s taken over the former address of Back of House on Carlaw, just north of Queen, near The Broadview Hotel, and occupies a space with high ceilings and a garage door that rolls up on sunny days. Takeout orders are still the primary source of revenue, but the spacious seating is new and unique to this location.
The bao menu is uniform across all locations and includes favourites like pork belly, jerked pork, and braised beef, currently on the Bathurst and The Grange menus. The fact that these bao items are large is one of my favourite features. These big bao are commendably affordable and satisfying, with a lot of stuff packed in. A single steamed bun offers a filling snack, while a complete supper costs $10 or less. Cold Noodles, a peanut-dusted vegetarian meal with large blocks of tofu on a bed of cucumber, shredded cabbage, carrot, radish, and noodles, is also a must-order. The whole dish is a melange of cool, crunchy textures with slippery chewy noodles once blended with a bit of chile oil.
The consistent stream of customers at Mean Bao proves that it is a welcome addition to Leslieville. Without exchanging words, the crew already knows what some of the regulars are having. Stop searching for your constant spot and visit this absolute banger of a restaurant.

La Carnita has opened on the east side near The Broadview Hotel, taking over the Riverside address that Rasputin formerly occupied. The new 80-seat cafe and bar, which owner Andrew Richmond developed in conjunction with Ian Rydberg of Solid Build & Design, keeps the previous location’s relaxed ambiance. Black-and-white photocopy colleges are heavily featured in the deep, tight area, accentuated by pink neon lights and hand-painted artwork from Rcadewizard.
Executive chef Jon Hamilton and chef de cuisine Zach Smith have created a menu that includes favourites from the original restaurant and rotating specials. Signature tacos such as the Pollo Frito and Carnita confit pig are still available. Still, there are some new rivals – daily specials that are so outstanding that they may warrant many visits throughout the week.
As an alternative to alcohol, the bar offers Agua Fresca, a mix of cucumber, mint, and lime, but if you’re looking for something more substantial, The Staycation might do the trick. With pineapple and lemon juice, it’s a tropical mixture of Appleton, Aperol, and liqueur de banana. Margaritas made with Tromba tequila and freshly squeezed lime juice are available by the glass or pitcher.
The new La Carnita sticks to its guns, slightly embracing the many populations of the neighbourhood without watering down anything. The customer is mainly young and hip on opening weekend, although there are a few young families (something you don’t see every day at the College location). The eatery hasn’t toned down its urban attitude, nor has it turned down the expletive-laced hip hop, despite having booster seats. Just go there and enjoy the numerous facilities provided.

Located at 912 Queen Street East, Juzz Sushi Restaurant offers classic maki along with oshizushi, torched sushi, ramen, and party trays near The Broadview Hotel. Juzz is a hidden gem in the community serving Japanese cuisine. Only a few booths are available, but there are plenty of seats at the bar and in the front window. The sushi is of excellent quality, has a lot of flavours, and is reasonably priced. The staff is quite pleasant.
The menu is categorized into Appetizers, Signature Rolls, Maki, Oshizushi, Torched Sushi, Combos, Sushi, Bowls, Hot Food, etc. A variety of exciting items are offered to bring diversity to the menu. I highly recommend Oshizushi Mackerel consisting of fresh red onion and cream cheese filling top with ginger, green & dry onion, bonito flakes and house soya. If you’d like to, you can order one of Party Trays options as they’re very affordable. Roll Tray 32pc comprises California roll, spicy salmon roll, tofu & avocado roll, salmon & avocado roll, dynamite roll and green dragon roll.
It has a fantastic contemporary look thanks to the cleanliness and dim lighting. The side booths are exceptionally comfy and let guests get the most out of their Juzz Sushi experience. The restaurant’s customer service is one of its features since its staff is kind and professional. On a memorable occasion, gather your loved ones and accompany them to Juzz Sushi.

La Paella is a Spanish restaurant offering a tapas menu and a high-end paella menu prepared using imported ingredients near The Broadview Hotel. Despite its modest external look, the food here is relatively high-end. The tiniest tapas start at $10, with paellas exceeding $50, and a specialist paella chef is on staff.
The Spanish-style olives, or aceitunas alinadas if you prefer to order in Spanish, are imported from Spain and marinated with Spanish paprika, garlic, and lemon. Boquerones, salty and strong-tasting white marinated anchovies imported from Spain, are coupled with rich Atlantic salmon, parsley, and imported Spanish capers for a dueta. Serrano and Iberico Jamon are also available, with Iberico Pata Negra cured platter for 24 months for $55. The Serrano is delicious and salty, with a thick rim of fat that melts in your tongue in a tiny sliver.
Wines start at $40, while a bottle of Vega Siciliana Valbuena may cost up to $450. This is Angel Goni’s first restaurant, despite having previously owned a catering firm and worked as a food and beverage manager in Madrid. He co-owns the restaurant with Gabriel Manailescu. They’ve created a team whose sole purpose is to create a pleasant experience for you and your party. Make sure you give La Paella a chance.
